Theatre creator and digital dramaturg Murdoch Schon will lead participants through an exploration of how theatre artists can use movement, body and objects in SketchSpace.
SketchSpace is Canada’s first virtual rehearsal hall, envisioned by Sarah Garton Stanley, created with Joel Adria in 2015, and was developed with the team at SpiderWebShow Performance. In the wake of COVID-19, we are proud to relaunch SketchSpace as a rehearsal space for you to rehearse, experiment, and create with collaborators across distance.
After a short tutorial on how to use SketchSpace’s tools, participants will move into a devising session. This workshop will approach both the technical aspects and devising process from a beginner’s perspective. No previous knowledge or experience is required. A SketchSpace technician will be on hand to help troubleshoot any issues that may come up. All you need to bring is your curiosity and imagination!
Creators of all stripes will be inspired to explore ideas in which the digital medium is an integral part of the process and concept. Murdoch will offer digital and analog creative strategies to develop dynamic performance sketches which engage and ignite creativity.
Tech Requirements: This workshop will be held on Zoom, and you will need to be seen and heard by the facilitators with camera and audio turned on. SketchSpace functions best on computer, using a Chrome browser. Headphones are recommended.
This workshop is geared toward folks who are interested in SketchSpace and devising in a digital environment. All levels of knowledge, devising experience, and digital literacy welcome.
Please bring: a solid-coloured sheet, blanket or towel, as well as 4 objects that are no bigger than a computer (i.e. a shoe, water bottle, spatula, hat).
Space is limited to 20 participants, so we can maximize opportunities for use of the SketchSpace platform, with lots of time to ask questions.

Your Facilitator: Murdoch Schon (they/them) is a director, dramaturg and theatre creator. Born in Treaty 1. Territory (Winnipeg) they have been living and creating theatre in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal) for almost a decade. Their practice blends movement, history and intimacy to create performances that chart humanity from it’s lowest depths to its highest peaks. Murdoch is fascinated by provocation, vulnerability, and the role of risk and failure in art making. They insist on the wondrous nature of theatre as a transformative space where rulers can fail, heroes can rise and monsters seem more familiar than angels. Murdoch is a graduate of the National Theatre School’s Directing Program and has a BFA, Specialization in Theatre and Development, from Concordia University. Selected Directing Credits: Justin Eddy and the Great Cosmic Crisis (Doorstep Theatre), Haven (FOLDA), it felt empty when the heart went at first but it is alright now (National Theatre School).
